Meningitis Research Foundation is one of the leading charities in the world dedicated to the eradication of meningitis and septicaemia. Over the last 20 years we have invested almost €20 million in research. This has led to much advancement into the prevention, detection and treatment of the disease and has saved many lives. Research has also halved the incidence of meningitis and septicaemia during this period.
Meningitis and septicaemia are the leading cause of death in children in Ireland from infectious diseases. Educating the public and the medical profession about these diseases is a key part of our vital work. Our recent ‘SMS video awareness campaign’ to inform the public about the disease, received a special commendation award from the “Astella’s Changing Tomorrow Awards” in January 2011. Downloading the free service to a mobile phone will provides individuals with a symptoms checker and emergency information: text TIME to 50308.
To achieve our goal of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia, we work closely with over 16,000 individuals and families and volunteers affected by this dreadful disease. Member, Peter Moorhead was chosen as Volunteer of the Year in “Health and Disability” section in the Ireland Involved Awards (Nov 2010) for his involvement in the SMS texting development.
We are very proud of the support we provide to the community. Our services include, a national Freefone 24 helpline (1800 41 33 44), a befriending service and we also provide personal one to one help for those affected by the disease. Only last year we received over 6900 phone calls to our helpline. In addition we trained up 145 volunteers as telephone befrienders.
